Industrial design is a creative activity that shapes the human-product relationship and its visual, physical, cognitive, and functional interface while interpreting the opportunities and constraints of technology on the basis of products or product systems. It is also a strategic competitive factor and an intellectual activity that contributes to the material culture of our society.

At ITU, industrial design is understood in the context of new product development. New product design and development is an interdisciplinary activity that satisfies the requirements of the industry regarding the users' needs. Industrial design plays a major role in this activity. The main functions of industrial design in new product design and development can be summarized as; configuring the product concept and specifications at the beginning of the process, visualizing the product concept, and sharing it with other shareholders of the process, and finally coordinating the teamwork, which is crucial for the successful development of new products.
